Too much Reader for what you need?

Readwise Reader is the power tool: articles, PDFs, newsletters, highlights, and spaced repetition, at $9.99 a month billed yearly or $12.99 billed monthly, with a 30-day trial and no free tier. If you live in highlights, you do not need an alternative. If you are paying for a library you do not open, or your unread pile is actually bookmarks, the job is smaller than Reader.

Instapaper and Matter are calmer readers. wallabag and Karakeep are the self-hosted path. Marqly summarizes a list and stops there. ZeroMark does not replace Reader's highlights. It clears bookmarks Reader was never holding.

We make ZeroMark. Prices and features below are from each vendor's own site, checked 17 October 2026, and linked in Sources.

What they do better

Reader's highlights and spaced repetition are the best in this set, and we are not competing with them. Ghostreader, PDFs, and newsletters are the rest of that product. If you use them, keep them.

Where ZeroMark is different

ZeroMark is for bookmarks you saved and did not read. A summary arrives before you decide, and the open count can hit zero. What you keep can go to Notion or Obsidian, where Reader already knows how to look.

Where ZeroMark falls short

No highlights, no spaced repetition, no PDF library, no newsletter inbox. Not a Reader replacement for people who read. A year is $39, against $9.99 times 12.

Switching

  1. Keep Reader if highlights are the habit.
  2. Connect here for the bookmarks Reader does not hold.
  3. Send keeps to Notion or Obsidian if you want them beside your highlights.

Questions people ask

Is ZeroMark a Readwise Reader alternative?

For an backlog, yes. For highlights and spaced repetition, no.

What is cheaper than Reader?

Instapaper Premium, Matter Premium, Karakeep's cloud, Marqly, and ZeroMark all print a lower annual number. Cheaper only helps if the job matches.

Is there a free Reader plan?

No. A 30-day trial. ZeroMark has a free plan for your latest saves.

Who can I self-host?

Karakeep. Not Reader, and not ZeroMark.

Can I use both?

Yes. That is the setup we expect.

What about Marqly's free tier?

Their pricing page in October 2026 said free up to 100 bookmarks, then Pro at $9 a month or $72 a year, with a lower first-year price. Our older page said 2,000. The October page is the one to trust until it changes again.
